The Institute will support national-scale energy resource planning for UN-SE4ALL sovereign member countries utilizing available energy data incorporated into interactive Sankey Energy Flow Diagram software visualization tools. Sankey diagrams show conserved quantities of energy within defined subsystem boundaries and the distribution of conversions of energy flows across subsystem boundaries. Sankey Energy Flow diagrams are used in various formats by international and national planning agencies, such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and Energy Information Agency (EIA). Work-Learning-Service interns of the Institute will also develop and maintain an On-Line Sankey Energy Analysis Service for multi-sector stakeholders for UN-SE4ALL sovereign member countries similar in construction to the International Energy Agency (IEA) shown below.

The Institute will provide additional Sankey Energy Analysis services that will utilize the Foreseer Project software developed by Dr. Julian Allwood, Director of Studies in Engineering at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). The Foreseer Project has created a tool to visualise the influence of future demand and policy choices on the coupled physical requirements for energy, water and land resources in a region of interest. The basis of the tool is a set of linked physical descriptions of energy, water and land, plus the technologies that transform those resources into final services – e.g. housing, food, transport and goods. The tool has a modular structure, with the potential to incorporate specialised analyses or models to calculate future demand, climate change, technological change, or other effects of relevance to the user. The tool will show resource shortages and other indicators of stress (e.g., ecosystem services) as a result of user inputs.
The Foreseer Tool allows visualisation of linked resource futures by drawing a set of Sankey diagrams for energy, water and land, showing the flow from basic resource (e.g. coal, surface water, and forested land) through transformations (e.g. fuel refining and desalination) to final services (e.g. sustenance, hygiene and transportation). The Foreseer Tool will structured to allow future extension to other regions, spatial and temporal scales, and resources.

The Institute will work with the Foreseer Project, the Millennium Institute (MI) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to integrate the Foreseer Tool with Threshold 21 (T21) Systems Dynamic Modeling (MI) and the Solar, Wind, Energy Resource Assessment (NREL software. This Work-Learning-Service integration will permit a comprehensive understanding of the the impact of policies and planning on the societies, economies and environment of developing countries through enhanced simulation and visualization of data across multiple sectors for decision support.

Sankey energy diagrams can be scaled for both macro and micro analysis of energy services. The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy utilizes Sankey diagrams to show how total primary energy is used by U.S. manufacturing plants (macro analysis) and how energy is utilized in manufacturing processes (micro analysis), as illustrated in the Sankey flow diagrams below:
Work-Learning-Service of the Institute initially will engage student interns in the application of Sankey Energy Analysis for urban-scale anaerobic digestion projects proposed under the Institute's Sustainable Bioenergy Project Accelerator Hub. Specifically, Sankey Flow Diagrams will be used to model Process Flows for municipal Waste Water Treatment (WWT) and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).
The Institute's US-China Fellowship program will provide Sankey Services for City Governments in the People's Republic of China.
